Terms of service

Last updated: 14 May 2026

These terms set out the deal between you and SightReader. They’re written to be read, not skimmed past. If anything is unclear, email hello@sightreader.app.

Agreement

By creating an account or using sightreader.app ("the service") you agree to these terms and to our privacy policy. If you don’t agree, please don’t use the service.

SightReader is operated by Bret Cameron, sole trader, based in London, United Kingdom ("we", "us", "our"). Reach us at hello@sightreader.app.

The service

SightReader is a web app for practising sight reading at the piano. You connect a MIDI keyboard, choose a piece, and the app gives you live feedback on your playing. We offer a free tier and a paid Pro subscription with additional features.

We may add, change, or remove features from time to time. If we remove or materially reduce a Pro feature you’re paying for, we’ll either refund the affected portion of your subscription or give you a comparable replacement.

Eligibility

You must be at least 13 years old to create an account. If you are under the age at which your country recognises you as competent to enter contracts (in England and Wales, 18), a parent or guardian must accept these terms on your behalf and supervise your use.

Your account

  • Sign-in is via Google, Microsoft, or an emailed magic link. Keep your inbox and authenticator secure — anyone with access to your email can sign in as you.
  • You must give accurate information and keep it up to date.
  • One account per person, please. Sharing accounts is not permitted on Pro.
  • You are responsible for activity under your account. Tell us straight away at hello@sightreader.app if you suspect unauthorised access.

Acceptable use

You agree not to:

  • Use the service to break any law or another person’s rights.
  • Upload music or content you don’t have the right to upload. By uploading, you confirm you own the rights or have a licence that allows the upload.
  • Probe, scrape, or scan the service for vulnerabilities other than as part of a good-faith security report. We welcome security reports — email hello@sightreader.app with the details and we’ll respond.
  • Reverse engineer, decompile, or attempt to extract the source code of any non open-source part of the service.
  • Resell access, mirror substantial parts of the library, or train a machine-learning model on the service’s output.
  • Send unsolicited messages to other users or impersonate anyone.

We may suspend or close accounts that breach these rules. For serious or repeated breaches we may do so without notice; otherwise we’ll give you a chance to put things right.

Subscriptions and billing

Pro

The Pro subscription unlocks additional features (full library access, daily-practice curation, and other premium features as published on our pricing page). Prices and currency are shown at checkout.

Billing

  • Payments are processed by Stripe. By subscribing you authorise us (via Stripe) to take recurring payments on your chosen schedule until you cancel.
  • We charge in advance for the upcoming period (monthly or annual). VAT is included where applicable based on your billing country.
  • If a payment fails we’ll retry over a few days. If we still can’t take payment, your Pro features pause until billing succeeds.

Price changes

We may change prices for new subscription periods. We’ll give you at least 30 days’ notice by email before any price increase. If you don’t agree to the new price, you can cancel before it takes effect.

Cancellation and refunds

You can cancel your Pro subscription at any time from your account page. Cancellation takes effect at the end of the period you’ve already paid for — you keep Pro until then.

14-day cooling-off (UK Consumer Contracts Regulations)

Pro is a digital service, and you have a statutory right to cancel within 14 days of subscribing for a full refund.

Important: by clicking the button to confirm your subscription you expressly request that we begin providing the Pro features immediately, and acknowledge that doing so means you lose your right to cancel for a refund once the service has begun. If you’d rather wait until the 14 days have elapsed before using Pro features, email hello@sightreader.app and we’ll defer activation.

Other refunds

Outside the cooling-off scenario, we don’t offer refunds for partial periods. If you believe you’ve been billed in error or our service is materially defective, email us — we’ll sort it out.

Content and intellectual property

Our content

The SightReader software, design, branding, and curated library are owned by us or our licensors. We grant you a personal, limited, revocable, non-transferable licence to use the service for the purpose it’s intended: practising piano sight reading.

Pieces in the library

Most pieces in the library are public-domain works (typically pre-1929) sourced from IMSLP or PDMX and similar open projects. Where a piece carries a particular licence (e.g. CC-BY), we display the attribution on the piece page. If you believe a piece has been included in error, email hello@sightreader.app and we’ll review and remove if required.

Your uploads

You keep ownership of any MusicXML files you upload. By uploading you grant us a non-exclusive, worldwide licence to host, render, and display the file solely so we can operate the service for you. We will not publish your private uploads to the public library without your express permission.

Feedback

If you send us product ideas or suggestions, we may use them without obligation to you — but we appreciate them and will usually credit you if you’d like.

Availability and "as is"

We aim to keep SightReader running, fast, and accurate, but we don’t promise a specific uptime. We may take the service down for maintenance — we try to do this at quiet times and tell you in advance for anything significant.

The service is provided "as is". While we test thoroughly, sight-reading feedback is a best-effort interpretation of what your MIDI keyboard sends us. Don’t rely on it for graded assessments or any decision with serious consequences.

Liability

Nothing in these terms limits our liability for:

  • death or personal injury caused by our negligence;
  • fraud or fraudulent misrepresentation; or
  • any other liability that cannot be excluded under English law.

Subject to that:

  • We’re not liable to you for any loss of profits, loss of business, business interruption, or loss of opportunity.
  • Our total liability to you in any 12-month period is capped at the greater of (a) the amount you paid us in that period, and (b) £50.
  • You agree to indemnify us against losses we incur because of your breach of these terms or your misuse of the service.

If you’re a consumer in the UK, none of this affects your statutory rights under the Consumer Rights Act 2015 or the Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013.

Termination

You can stop using the service or delete your account at any time from your account page. We’ll keep the data we’re required to keep (e.g. billing records for HMRC) and remove the rest as set out in the privacy policy.

We can suspend or close accounts that breach these terms, where we have to under law, or if we discontinue the service. If we close your account other than for breach, we’ll refund the unused portion of any active Pro subscription.

Changes to these terms

We may update these terms when the product or our suppliers change. The "Last updated" date at the top is the source of truth. For material changes we’ll email active users at least 14 days before the change takes effect; continued use after that date constitutes acceptance.

Governing law and jurisdiction

These terms and any dispute arising out of them are governed by the laws of England and Wales. The courts of England and Wales have exclusive jurisdiction, except that if you are a UK consumer you may also bring proceedings in the courts of the country where you live.
